According to the Google Operating System blog, gmail is getting IMAP support.
This is really cool, although it will be interesting to see how they manage to deal with gmail tags – just translate them into IMAP folders, perhaps?
My gmail account hasn’t been enabled yet, but I’m looking forward to checking it out.

There’s been a lot of coverage recently about a new web app called Twine, which is supposedly built on semantic web technology. It’ll be interesting to see how this fares in the real world, as there are precious few real semantic web apps in the wild with any kind of mass popularity.

Guests at a business lunch hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce on Thursday were told that investing in scientific research provides a golden opportunity to put in place a lasting foundation for future economic growth. Professor Frank Gannon, director general, Science Foundation Ireland, said that intense competition from emerging economies means that new areas of innovation need to be explored. Prof Gannon also said there was a need to focus on a supportive financial structure addressing the tax regime, R&D credits, state aids, R&D framework and procurement.

James McInerney has a nice post on his blog about applying for an RFP grant.
James’s comment is that
It is a reasonably good system, not perfect, but I am not sure that any system is perfect.
Probably a fair comment. A lot of the reasoning behind how programmes such as RFP are organised is based on the number of proposals we receive, and the timeframe we have to turn the results around. Each year, RFP is by far our biggest individual programme, usually with in excess of 700 pre-proposals.
In any event, good luck to James with his proposal.

Like others before me, I am moving my blog over to the Mephisto blogging system from Typo. I have found in recent months that Typo has required a lot of hand-holding to keep it up-and-running, so I’m hopeful that Mephisto will prove more stable.
Inevitably, some content will get lost in the move, so I’ll try to get everything back up and running as quickly as possible.
In parallel with that, I’ve moved to a new host: site5.com. Worth a look if you’re interested in pretty good Rails hosting at rock bottom prices.

If the US science funders don’t go for it, perhaps SFI could step in?
“Now, I’m no science major, but if I’m being told by a group of people that the protons, neutrons, and electrons need unifying, then I think we owe it to the American people to go in and unify them,” Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) said. “After all, isn’t a message of unity what we want to send to our children?”
