There are a couple of interesting events being organised by Lero at the moment. The first is a Lero industry event discussing Global Software Development. This event is a follow-on from the Lero event of last November, and is scheduled to give people a bit more time to get themselves organised. It is to be held on March 10 in Enterprise Ireland’s office in Merrion Hall.
The second is XP2008, which is a really big deal if you’re in the agile/XP software development camp. The conference runs from 10 – 14 June, so book now!

Following last year’s successful Strategic Research Clusters, SFI has just launched a second call of the SRC programme.
The time-line for the programme this year is pretty tight, with the first deadline for Expressions of Interest on February 29th, and the Pre-proposal submission following shortly on March 10th.
Would-be applicants are advised to prepare their various submissions as soon as possible.
From the SFI website:
The SRC programme has been designed to facilitate the clustering of outstanding researchers to carry out joint research activities in areas of strategic importance to Ireland, while also giving the time and resources to attract and cultivate strong industry partnerships that can inform and enhance their research programmes. Submissions are invited in areas of science or engineering research that underpin the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), or Biotechnology sectors. Additionally (and following consultation with a wide variety of key stakeholders), SFI will also consider submissions in the area of Financial Mathematics in the 2008 SRC Competition.
Refer to the appropriate section of the SFI website for full details.

Last week, January 24 to be exact, techludd 2.0 held its first event in the Odessa Club in Dublin. Despite some early bad-mouthing, since retracted, it looks like the event was a huge success.
Even TechCrunch UK have covered the aftermath of the event.
I had it down in the diary to attend, but unfortunately RealLife got in the way. Will have to make more of an effort next time.

Conor O’Neill wrote a post before Christmas that I’ve been meaning to write for about six months. I have a Nokia N70 with Vodafone, and cannot get the package that I want: high-bandwidth internet access for both the handset and as a bluetooth modem to my laptop, with a decent download limit (~3-5 GB/month).
The technology is all there, but the telcos can’t seem to get their act together. Vodafone, and most of the others, I’m sure, still act like CompuServe circa 1990. The sooner that they realise that their business is in providing fat pipes at a reasonable price, and let us build & deploy our own applications (VoIP anyone?) at the edges, the better.
Three’s packages seem to be the closest to what I want, but any time I’ve called them and tried to confirm that I could use the handset as a laptop modem, I’ve been greeted with a big fat “Huh? – that’s not possible”. Maybe, with their new internet packages, it might be worth giving them another call.
Or maybe just wait for a 3G iPhone to become available.
