ERC starter grants

I wrote previously about the Ideas Programme run by the ERC that I was briefly responsible for. The deadline for the Starter Grants has just passed, and we have been informed that the ERC received a total of 9,167 applications from across Europe, of which 126 were Irish.

Given that only 200—250 grants will be awarded, that means that there are going to be an awful lot of disappointed people: a success rate in the region of 2.5%.

John Breslin in DERI

Just came across another blogger: John Breslin of DERI.

DERI is an SFI funded CSET – Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology. The CSETs are SFI’s largest investments in research, where we fund an entire centre – rather than just a single PI and his/her team – for an amount up to €25M over 5 years.

DERI is working in the area of semantic web, which is viewed by many as the next natural evolution of the web, whereby we try to infuse the content of the web and web-based services with meaning, or semantics.
